Urgent Advice Required

I will be more than 6 months pregnant when we are in Samui and Bangkok for a 10 day holiday.

I have just realised that our last 2 days in Bangkok coincides with Songkran. Our Samui hotel is sold out during Songkran, so will have to be in Bangkok. While we dont mind having water splashed on us, we are concerned about anything more severe (ice missiles, impure water which stings the eyes, talc etc) given my pregnant state. We were planning to stay in the Sukhumvit area. I%26#39;d greatly appreciate any advice on whether we should try to change our dates or just stick with it. Thanks.

The water itself will be OK, but people often mix it with talc. I suggest you travel by taxi/skytrain as much as possible. You%26#39;ll be Ok in shopping malls, restaurants etc. Samui won%26#39;t be any different to Bngkok in respect to Songkran.

Thanks a bunch.

Just dont go to Khaosan Rd. as the road will be full with powder..very slippery..

Take care and have fun.

be aware that some ppl might splash you with ice-cold water, which might be a shock to your system. also, it%26#39;s been my observation that drunken farangs pose much more of a threat to your safety than are thai people. for example, deliberately aiming high-powered water guns at your eyes. snd DO NOT ride on a motorcycle taxi at any daylight time during songkran.

Depending on your point of view Bangkok can be the best or worst place to be during songkran.Everyone leaves the city during this time so the roads are clear ,you can travel around the city quickly and the smog has disappeared.Unless you go down a small soi you are un likely to get wet, also Thais will respect your condition and will not target you.Enjoy your last 2 days in Thailand,Bangkok is never this peaceful apart from this time of year.

expatBirmingham writes: ';Unless you go down a small soi you are un likely to get wet,...'; Whoa there, partner, that%26#39;s not quite true! I%26#39;ve gotten soaked on main avenues like sukhumvit, ploenchit road, rajdamri, asoke, etc. You aren%26#39;t immune anywhere, IMHO. I%26#39;ve even been on the red buses [non-air conditioned ones] where the thai revelers throw buckets of water thru the open windows! You could shut the windows, but then you%26#39;re in a human sauna, so the locals opt to get wet instead [and retaliate by squirting their waterguns from the windows] ;) I don%26#39;t know how much traveladvisor6 will be ';showing'; her pregnancy, but you are right that the thais will respect her condition, if they notice it. She would be well- advised to learn the thai phrase for ';i%26#39;m pregnant'; ;) Unfortunately, she still is in harms ways from the unruly, drunken farangs, who couldn%26#39;t care less.
