hi graham, I think your aust $ converts to 400 baht. The kinokuniya mega-bookstore in bangkok sells it for 180 baht, just so you know. I%26#39;d be happy to answer any questions you might have, particularly regarding the weekend market...I%26#39;ve been going there for years. (My Thai girlfriend bought the cutest little white bunny there 2 weekends ago for 100 baht)

Hi Bkk resident,

can you tell me does the weekend market have much in the way of scrapbooking and crafts?

Also I have heard that there is a section that deals with shipping goods to other countries....do you know anything about this?

Thanks

Karin

hi, karin! i%26#39;m not into scrapbooks in particular, but chatuchak has oodles of craft supplies and crafts of all kinds, so i%26#39;d be very surprised if they didn%26#39;t have what you%26#39;re looking for :) You can easily spend all day looking around. As a suggestion, I wouldn%26#39;t buy the very first thing you see; note the price and stall location (the # on the stall, very important, you%26#39;ll never find it again if you don%26#39;t! hundreds of stalls)! Once you%26#39;ve seen examples from a few places, you can go back to the best shop and buy....i%26#39;ve kicked myself finding something i liked better a short time after an impulse purchase! And yes, there are stalls that exclusively provide int%26#39;l shipping located at sections 5,6, and 7, very visible as you walk along the the road. The nancy chandler map (and any other decent map displaying the market) clearly shows the location. They seem to do a very brisk business, but i can%26#39;t vouch for the service, having never used it.

btw, graham didn%26#39;t mention it, but my 2005 nancy chandler map came with a little yellow book (3';X5';, 72 pages, very small print) which is an index book by subject that shows the locations the item can be found in bkk, incl chatuchak. very helpful.

Hi Bkk,

thats a lot for that info? Went last trip to this market and had kids with us. It was way too hot and I ended up leaving and left the others to shop. This time I will organise a babysitter...

Cheers

Karin

karin, it%26#39;s best to go early, say 8-9 am to avoid the worst heat and crowds. also, scattered thru the market are a few glass-enclosed small a/c cafes where you can take a break and have a cool drink and snack. I like to sit at the covered open-air coffee/food stalls around sections 2 and 3; great for having an iced coffee or fruit drink and ppl watch. ;)

Where is this mega bookstore? We will be staying at the Baiyoke Sky Hotel. Is it far from here?

Lulufluff, there are 2 kinokuniya%26#39;s near you, the nearest is on the 6th floor of the Central World Plaza in the Isetan dept store, just around the corner from you. The largest kino store in bkk is on the 3rd floor of the Siam Paragon. Both shopping areas are easily located on any current bkk map. btw, just google both paragon and central, they have excellent websites with floorplans.

btw, lulufluff, ';megastore'; is a relative term here, kinokuniya has the largest selection of english and japanese books/magazines in Thailand at the siam paragon, but it may be far smaller than what%26#39;s available in Australia. They also carry a large selection of Thai lit, of course.
