Laptops work pretty much anywhere in the world, there is nothing country-specific in them.

Thailand prices for computer items are not that great compared to HK, Taiwan or Singapore. Not as advanced or as competitive.

cheers DXBINC, for a speedy response.

do you have any comparitive frices for say a contemparary note book, ie: BKK as apossed to HK, SP

Kind regards all thoughts welcome

MARCUS

Marcus I wouldnt bother buying a laptop overseas. Perth prices are currently extremely competetive. Any savings you think you will make by buying one overseas will be wiped out upon your return when you have to pay the duty on the item.

Just ensure you take a good quality laptop surge protector with you, along with a power adaptor.

Info from the Customs website:

What you need to do when buying goods

If you wish to claim a refund, you must get an original tax invoice from the store where you buy the goods. All stores registered for GST will be able to give you a tax invoice. A refund cannot be given without it.

A tax invoice prominently states the words %26#39;tax invoice%26#39; and Australian Business Number (ABN) of the retailer, the purchase price including the GST paid, a description of the goods, the name of the supplier and the date the purchase was made.

Tax invoices for purchases of $1000 or more need additional information, such as the name and address of the purchaser.

More information on tax invoices is available by contacting the Australian Taxation Office.

How you make a claim

You will need to present the following at the Customs TRS facility when you depart Australia:

* your goods (to prove you are taking them out of the country);

* the original tax invoice from the retailer (to provide information for Customs officers);

* your passport; and

* your international boarding pass or other proof of travel.

You should note that it is a legal requirement that the person who purchases the goods must be the person who makes the claim for a refund of GST.

Where you make a claim

Claims can be made after you have passed through Customs and Immigration outward processing at :

* the TRS facilities at international airports at Sydney, Brisbane, Melboure, Perth, Cairns, Adelaide, Darwin and Gold Coast;

* cruise liner terminals at Circular Quay and Darling Harbour in Sydney, Cairns, Darwin, Fremantle, Darwin and Hobart.

If you are leaving Australia from another port you should contact Customs to find out if you can make a claim.

Bringing the goods back into Australia

If you bring the goods back into Australia, you could be liable to pay GST. Normal passenger concessions will apply but if in doubt you should declare the goods to Customs on your return.

More information is contained in the brochure Know Before You Go which is available from Customs.

Prices are not all that great in BKK then I wouldn%26#39;t buy a laptop there, I was just in the MBK centre and you would have to be on your toes all the time so as to know what you are buying. Software is OK (pirated)

Just confirming with others - Bangkok or for that matter Thailand is not the place to buy a laptop. Prices are not cheap due to the high taxes and obtaining an international warranty is almost non existent (unless you were to head for Powermall in Emporium or the electronics section in Central or Siam paragon - then the prices are not cheap at all).

Pantip Plaza is full of fakes, but there are some stalls selling real stuff but it is stil not cheap and you need to know the store to know the reliability (unless you buy from the top floor which is a proper IT outlet).

Best to buy your notebook in Oz, and look for periperals in Pantip which can be quite cheap - e.g. card readers, memory cards, laptop bag etc etc.

Normally if you buy one in Perth all you%26#39;ll need is a two pin plug which are readily available in Thailand almost anywhere - department stores, IT etc. The voltage adaptor with most noteobooks nowadays are multi voltage and cycle to cope with people travelling around. Make sure your notebook comes with abg wireless and you can surf the net to check your emails etc.

A security precaution when travelling is to purchase a kensington lock so you can attach your computer to the clothing rack in the hotel or somewhere which is difficult to remove. Ok, it won%26#39;t stop a determined thief however it makes it more difficult for them to steal. Otherwise if it is not too big a laptop place it in the in room safe.

Thanks, all

can you advise a perth site to buy a laptop?

Zillions of places to buy a laptop in perth. Try pricing Harvey Norman against specialists like Abacus or Arrow Computers.

Depends on where you live, what your needs are etc etc.
