Buying Furniture

Is it worth buying furniture and shipping it back to Australia? What is the duty like re charges?

thanks and cheers

I would say not - well, not from Phuket anyway. Firstly you will need to allow for transportation (to Bangkok if buying in Phuket), shipping, fumigation, import duty and GST.

There%26#39;s not much in Phuket worth buying in my personal opinion, don%26#39;t know whether everyone would agree with me. If you were to buy any furniture from Thailand, it would be from Chiang Mai, from what I%26#39;ve heard, that%26#39;s the cheapest and best range. It%26#39;s made up there.

Hi,

Don%26#39;t forget the Quarantine issues. Anything made from wood, plant or animal has to be safe to bring back home. It has to be declared and it maybe confiscated.

My opinion - buying furniture over there is not worth the hassle.

cheers

We also found out like a lot of Asian countries if you do bring it back just be aware of the changes in climate if it is wood as it is prone to crack as it changes temperature. Lucky for us this only happened for one very large elephant that split. friends of ours organised some lovely wood furniture to find within 12 months dues to our climatic changes that it had split in many spots.

We lived in Melbourne at the time so are talking from first hand experiences.

Thanks everyone, I think we might give furniture a miss and go diving instead :)
