Comparison Please Ko Lanta Vs Khao Lak

Hi Guys,

Have been to Khao Lak and Ao Nang and loved both of them. We are planning our 3rd trip to Thailand this year and like the look of Ko Lanta how does it compare in terms of beaches, nightlife, shopping, sightseeing.

We like to stay somewhere relatively quiet but with easy access to restaurants, shops and bars. What area would you recommend.

Thanks

I%26#39;m interested too..up you go!

Comparison Please Ko Lanta Vs Khao Lak

Hi Sarah,

we too have stayed in Khao Lak and Krabi. I%26#39;ve done a lot of research and I think you%26#39;d love Ko Lanta. Fabulous beaches, bars and restaurants... lots of shacks on the beaches which are a bonus! We%26#39;re off there in a few weeks, plan to hire a car to get around the island, and a day with lantalongtail.com, to explore the islands that we haven%26#39;t seen from Krabi. Have a look at OldDogNewTrick%26#39;s forum post. We%26#39;ve gone for the Pimalai, the beach is apparently fabulous, great views, and plenty of local shacks.

Having a week there and then trying out the new Amari Vogue, then a week at our favourite, the Tubkaak!

Kate

Hi Kate,

Hope you are well. We don%26#39;t go until December, renting a private villa - or so I hope, it isn%26#39;t finished until March!

Please let me know how your trip goes and how it compares.

When do you fly out?

We stayed at Khao Lak and Koh Lanta last year and just got back from a return trip to Koh Lanta and this time we stayed on Phuket as well. We will be back to Koh Lanta next year and are considering trying the Amari Vogue (we didn%26#39;t get to Railey Beach this time).

Needless to say we love Koh Lanta. We enjoyed Khao Lak town, but Koh Lanta has the edge. We stayed at Long Beach and Khlong Dao beach and enjoyed both - both had lots of great (and cheap) restaurants along the beach and in Saladan. Plenty of daytrips to do (Koh Rok, Koh Phi Phi, 4 islands). Comparable shops/market stalls to Khao Lak. Easy and cheap to get around by tuk tuk. Enough people around at night without being too noisy.

P.S. (Kate) I%26#39;m also originally from Lichfield - small world!

Hi,

Thank you for the info. So is it as quiet at Khao Lak, that%26#39;s what we are after.

What gives it the edge?

Thanks

This was good post to read :)

We are also pondering between Khao Lak/Koh Lanta (and maybe even Ao Nang/Koh Chang). There are too many interesting places in Thailand to visit! :)

Both places are nice and rather quiet, but Khao Lak is perhaps more conveniant as it is closer to the airport, and with easy access to good hospitals, the hustle and bustle of Phuket etc.

Koh Lanta is a bit more remote, cheaper, and still with a laidback and more local atmosphere than Khao Lak, IMO. But the island is rapidly developing. Especially along the northern beaches, where a lot of optimistic Swedes are making huge investments in expensive private villas and apartments.

Most of the beaches I have seen are nice, quiet and wide enough for sunbathing and playing children at both koh Lanta and Khao Lak. The long and relaxing Klong Khong beach at Koh Lanta has a very rocky seabed though, so it is not possible to swim there.

Ao Nang is very crowded and developed compared to these two. But the surroundings at Rai Ley, Phra Nang etc. are very beautiful and spectacular, and really worth a visit.

Hi Imagion,

Thanks for the info. Laid back is what we are after! We always choose one part of the holiday to totally chill - last year it was Khao Lak and thought we would try Ko Lanta this year.

From what you have said - it sounds ideal for us.
