Hotel Choice

Hello,

I%26#39;m considering traveling to Bangkok in July and I%26#39;m trying to decide on a hotel.

Between the Oriental and Peninsula, which would you choose. I know they are both great hotels so I%26#39;m having a tough time.

Thanks so much!

Hotel Choice

No contest, the Oriental wins, if you can afford it. Over a hundred years of history, worldwide reputation, often cited as the finest hotel in the world. I%26#39;ll be curious to hear which hotel you picked, and a travel report after?

Hotel Choice

As a regular visitor to both of these hotels over many years now i believe that there is little to choose between them, they are both superior 5* Hotels therefore you will i%26#39;m sure be afforded every luxury. Currently i have been preferring the Pen but this is only due to slightly cheaper room rates (and a couple of free upgrades) Some might also include the SGS in the list of best BKK hotels - i am one of them.

Superior rooms and deluxe rooms at the Oriental are more expensive and ';less room'; than Deluxe and Grand Deluxe at the Peninsula. Suites at the Peninsula are large, gorgeous and comfortable, but are not at special as the Staterooms and Author%26#39;s Suites at the Oriental.

I prefer the pool at the Peninsula for it%26#39;s size and overall lack of crowding. ESPA at the Peninsula is the best spa I have ever experienced.

Location...both have boats to Skytrain. I don%26#39;t have a location preference for either one, really.

It used to be an easy decision, between the two, when the Peninsula Grand Deluxe Suites were $185/night with breakfast, but those days are long gone. You won%26#39;t go wrong with either one.

Oriental would be my selection. A very historical hotel with opulence and grace! My cousin had his wedding reception there and it was incredible.

Get a room with a view of the river (i.e. a higher floor) which makes for amazing day and even more spectacular night pictures.

Have afternoon tea in the writer%26#39;s lounge.

Service is top notch!

Can%26#39;t speak higher of this place!

Have a great stay in Bangkok.

Hi

will be staying for 4 nights in the Pen

Hope you don%26#39;t mind me asking, does anyone know the time for the last shuttle boat service?

thanks

p.s

Pen looks great, i%26#39;ve stayed in singapore Oriental hotel and it excellent too, though fancied a change this time round. Whatever two you choose i have know doubt you will not be disapointed.

I would go for Oriental purely because of its unique style and good restaurant. Please be noted that both hotels are out of way from city center.

Peninsula boats run 6 AM to midnight I think. Check their website to be sure.

Hi

thanks fish2 will check

Hi,

I would choose the Pen every time. It is so beautifully appointed and the views, particularly from the higher floors, are spectacular. The Oriental has an old world feel and it was obviously the premier hotel for many years but these days, I think the Peninsula%26#39;s brand of luxury is superior. The boats for the river crossing are quite special in design and the whole scene is magical in the evenings, particularly. By the way, for a taste of the Oriental Hotel, try their dinner cruise - you get a cocktail in their riverfront grounds before boarding also. The service is excellent and the food quite good. All in all it is a nice thing to do - about $60a head, or thereabouts , if I remember rightly. It is a bit expensive but the food in all the 5 star hotels is of that order.

Hope this helps! Regards

Why leave yourself pondering whether you made the right choice - do both! the shuttle boat from the pen will quite happily take you over to the Orienten jetty and visa versa. I did this a few months ago and it sure beats the standard arrival i.e arriving all hot + sweaty in a taxi after negotiating the BKK traffic.
