Bars in Bangkok and teens??

We are a family of 6 travelling to Bangkok Aril 08, 4 adults 1 17yr old 1 14 year old, then we are onto the dusit Hua hin . Are there any restrictions about taking teens this age into bars etc? Advise gratefully received

Bars in Bangkok and teens??

The official age to get into a bar is 20.

The police do make checks and some of the bars have staff on the door to ensure everyone is over age.

You should have no problem in your hotel depending which hotel you are staying.

Bars in Bangkok and teens??

So no problem with restaurants selling alcohol then?

If it%26#39;s a combination bar and restaurant, you should have no problem taking teens or younger inside. Otherwise, the staff/door people will politely advise you of the age restrictions as they apply to their establishment. In night entertainment areas such as patpong, nana plaza, soi cowboy, etc. there%26#39;s no problem with accompanied children walking around outside (they just can%26#39;t go inside the bars). Hope that helps.

What exactly is Thai Law. I have been told that I cannot take my 14 year old daughter in a club lounge in a 5 star hotel during happy hour. This was not the case 3 years ago in Bangkok and it certainly is not the case in other parts of Thailand, we have just come back. This is putting me off staying in Bangkok as we like to book a club room and enjoy those benefits including a drink before dinner. Surely you have to have a law that governs everywhere not as and when they choose.

Hi;

The Thai%26#39;s law is prohibited alcohol sell to underage people which is less than 20y.o. That is a little better than USA No Alcohol for under 21y.o individual , but, some country as Mexico you can drink all you want when you reach 18 y.o.

The reason kid under 18y.o. is not allowed to enter the club bars is very simple, the bars are designated as places for drinking alcohol. Here is something I don%26#39;t understand why this is an issue.

Who are the Parents like to expose their chidren to the Alcohol at such young ages ?

I like wine much better than hard drink

Thai law covers everywhere, its a matter of enforcement. Its strict in Bangkok and the new government take the law seriously. Don%26#39;t expect things in Thailand to work the way they do in your home country.

dragonc is absolutely correct here. and enforcement of the law also varies between individual police districts within bangkok. the district police commanders each have their own ideas about how strictly to enforce the law and have considerable latitude. as a rule, everything is much more lax outside the metropolitan areas.

Now don%26#39;t take this the wrong way - but I suspect you will have little problem as if your teens are anything like a normal size they will look plenty big and old enough to thais. I took my daughter into many bars aged 14 or so with no issues - maybe if you were to try it in soi cowboy or in gogo bars they might well get iffy - the issue thai police are concerned about is thai under age drinking ( thais tend not to take drink that well so younger thais become sometimes violent and a danger to others and themselves)

was in a bar in bkk saturday where there were a couple of well behaved young kids - no problem.

Thanks for the advise, so,,,,, what if they are in the bar but drinking soft drinks, neither would be drinking alcohol any way other than the occasional glass of wine with dinner? Would it still pose a problem entering the bars?

My daughter is 14 and when in the Far East I am sure they think she is older but I just would not want the risk of being turned away from hotel bars. We would not dream of going to bars outside of hotels with her but in a hotel we like to sit and relax and have a drink and bearing in mind this has never been a problem before for us, we are giving Bangkok a miss and we will find another route to get to Krabi.
