has anyone stayed here ??

Its a bit off the beaten track. Between Bangrak and Chaweng, not a great location, but if you get a good deal, why not.

has anyone stayed here ??

Has any one stayed here yet?

Its a nice hotel and the rates are reasonable, but its a 10 minute walk to the big buddha beach along probably the worst road in Samui.

Thanks Footballgolf!

Hi! Thank for information!

What about thi hitel - is it clean and as good as in photo on hotel site?

10 minutes to beach, is it really hard:-) in you opinion?

Thanks beforehead.

I%26#39;ve posted a review from a stay in December. It%26#39;s a great hotel but not for walking.Scooter hire or Jeep hire are very cheap.

Hi, again,

i have booked this hotel and really disturbing about its allocation. Is it reaaly long way to beach?

Is it reaaly a problem?

Could you please estimate approximate distance to beach?

I like walking:-) But 1-2 kilometers, not more.

Thanks in advance.

Lena

Hi, the hotel is very nice, it%26#39;s new and everything is good there. You have to walk about 10 min to the beach, not that long. But this is not the best beach anyway, better rent a bike and go to Choengmon or Bophut beach which are much nicer and easy to get to. 5-7 min. on the bike.

We stayed here for 2 nights the hotel overall was what we were looking for a place to sleep close to the airport in relative comfort and with a nice pool Maya ticked these boxes. However we were expecting a Spa there isn%26#39;t one I was advised they are hoping to open one next year so this was mis-leading and a disapointment as we were looking to book some treatments. It is also on a road that is being built therefore it is a pretty bumpy ride in both directions and taxi%26#39;s do not like driving down the road so you have to pay a premium for this. I do believe that once the road is finished and the other developments are complete it will be a great hotel.

  • best gogo's

what would be your no1 gogo bar in pattaya? last time i went polo was pretty good and dolls house i think its called that was also pretty gd.

    best gogo's

    Number 1 for what????

The truth is these places change every few weeks/months to keep up with demands of the police/public and racketeers.....

    best gogo's

The most populars with nice shows are in walking street Angelwitch, What%26#39;s Up, Club Boesche and Living Doll%26#39;s are among the best.

look up nightmarch in google - a monthly column about gogos in pattaya

i imagine you mean what is the best for eye candy??? and the usual?

On my last 3 visits Happy as been the best, always seemed to be very busy to, so they must be doing something right. Ala Pimlian NLdolls is usually very good. One i went to last November was a relatively new one called baby dolls a gogo and that was good too. Angelwitch always a must visit.

what i should of said was what is the best gogo for hot girls and a gd drink and a laugh.

    2 rainy seasons/Low High seasons?

    Dear all that know it,

Would i be right in thinking that there are two rainy seasons on Koh Samui?

    April/May and october/november/december.

I have read on the internet that april/May are the hottest months bringing slightly more rain than say july/aug/sept which are the dryest months and oct/nov/dec being the wettest, would this account for may/june being classed as the low season thus cheaper hotel rates? which i find quite baffeling considering that the rest of Thailand at this time is the wettest therefore one would think that everybody wanting to visit thailand in may/june would head for Samui for the dryer weather, thus making these months high season confused? theres more, why would people visit samui in nov/dec the wettest season when the rest of thailand is starting its dry season yet nov/dec in samui is classed as high season making the hotel prices higher in the wettest months, it beats me.

    Manicus.

    2 rainy seasons/Low High seasons?

    Manicus,

You%26#39;re mis-informed. There is only one rainy season for all of Thailand and it is in the fall. I was in Samui 3 years ago during mid October and on the morning I had to leave, it began to downpour and within a matter of 30 minutes, I had to wade through knee deep water to get to the taxi to take me to the airport.

April and May are very hot in Thailand also.

    Regards,

    Martian

    2 rainy seasons/Low High seasons?

    Hi Matien59

And heres me thinking the wet season on the Andaman coast was different to that of the gulf of Thailand,i have visited Krabi/lanta/lak many times in december with glorious dry sunny weather, whilst at the same time in samui its raining buckets.

    Manicus.

The south has a slightly different season to the rest of Thailand, but with weather everywhere changing, the seasons here are getting fouled up to. The rainy season starts earlier than before, the hot season gets hotter, and non seasonal rain is more common than before.

    Manicus

You are quite right the Andaman coast sees most of its rain from late May through July.

This is because there are two monsoons. The South West monsoon generally tracks north of here. The North East monsoon is the one that brings the November rain.

Refurbished Khao Lak Resort, any reviews

Hello, we are planning our 5th trip to Thailand next august and some time in Khao Lak. Doing some research, I%26#39;ve discovered this resort and it seems it has been totally refurbished, especially pool and jacuzzy villa. I would appreciate reviews and comments.

    Thanks !

Refurbished Khao Lak Resort, any reviews

Certainly looks very nice from the beach. Excellent position and not far to walk to central KL.

Refurbished Khao Lak Resort, any reviews

What is the exact name of the place you are asking about? I am looking for a place over New Years that is on the beach but close to town.

The resort in question is the Khao Lak Resort. It is located on Khao Lak Sunset Beach but there are a number of resorts both at that beach and neighbouring Nang Thong Beach that are directly on the beach and ';near to towm';. In the case of Khao Lak, ';near to town'; or Khao Lak Town, usuually means Bang La On which has most of the restaurants, shops and bars. However, just a couple of miles north is the expanding area of Bang Niang, which also has resorts on the beach, its own share of restaurants and bars with new ones opening daily and, in my view, a better sense of community than La On.

Have a look at the excellent map at http://khaolaklovers.com/Khao-Lak-Map.htm and the further link to http://www.khaolaklovers.com/KhaoLakMap.html

for the various resorts and their locations then if you want more information on any open a new thread and we%26#39;ll try to help.

I know it is a fair way off buy Christmas and New Year in Khao Lak is its busiest time and resorts get booked out very quickly so you are wise to be looking, and booking, early.

Thanks. I posted a new question partly similar to this one before I saw this reply. A question my wife also had was, how easy is it to get to some of the islands from Khao Lak? Do we need to to get to Phuket first?

By some of the islands do you mean Phi Phi and others nearer to Krabi? If yes, then you can get therev either from Phuket or from Krabi but there are tours going there from Khao Lak which would connect at either Phuket (about 1 1/2 hoursc away) or Krabi (about 2 1/2 hours away but nearer Phi Phi and other islands in that area.

Similarly youn can visit Phang Nga Bay from Khao Lak.

We have 9 nights available in that vicinity of Thailand, following 8 nights in Chiangmai and a couple in Bangkok. We love a good beach, snorkeling and playing in the water, but not all day, every day. I know that in some places you can kayak around the limestone caves, etc. So I guess we want a combination of real relaxation and quiet, with access to other activities too.

Do you think there is plenty for a family to do in Khao Lak, or might a visit to Krabi as well as Khao Lak be better? Driving hours each way to Krabi or Phuket isn%26#39;t a good option for us.

    Thanks for all the advice!

I think there is plenty for a family to do in Khao Lak and no better place for a day%26#39;s snorkelling at the Similan or Surin Islands, two world class sites. Elephant trekking, Khao Sok National Park just over an hour away, Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island - OK to see from the water but don%26#39;t go on it. It%26#39;s small and vcastly overcommercialised. Sea Kayaking into the Hongs - inland lagoons entered through caves - is great fun and educational for the kids) are a few suggestions and of course, great beaches.

How to get from Royal Orchid Sheraton to Grand Palace

Hi we will be stopping in Bangkok for 2 days and staying at the Royal Orchid Sheraton. We will be travelling with our children age 6 and 9 and would like to take them to see the Grand Palace but want to ensure we get there and back to the hotel safely.

Several years ago on a previous visit to Bangkok(pre skyrail) my husband and I had a nasty experience when we tried to get back from the palace to our hotel we couldn%26#39;t find a taxi and ended up in a tuktuk down some dodgy back alley looking at fake diamonds. Not wishing to repeat this experience does anyone know the best way to get back from the palace to our hotel? Also any ideas on places to visit to keep kids happy greatly appreciated.

How to get from Royal Orchid Sheraton to Grand Palace

There is a water taxi stop right next to the hotel, where you can catch the water taxi to the Grand Palace. There is also a tourist boat that costs a little more that makes many stops at the main tourist sights. It is fun to ride on the river and much cheaper than a taxi.

    Thanks for the replies.

Water taxi sounds ideal (kids will love it) - do you know how far a walk it is from the water taxi stop to the palace entrance? Also how frequent is the service and does it operate everyday. Finally where else can you go to on the Water taxi?

    Thanks again

    Saint29969

See this website for more info on water taxis and the tourist boat:

    http://www.chaophrayaboat.co.th/

It is about 5 minutes walk from the ferry to the Grand Palace, directly down the street in front of you. Do not be deterred by touts who say the palace is closed %26#39;%26#39;today%26#39;%26#39;. They are very convincing, and can be annoying.

The Grand Palace is open every day of the year as it is also the site of the most revered Wat in the kingdom and is available for prayer EVERY day!

If you go independantly, you will see milling tourists round the entrance (gates guarded by sentries), these will be the usual large Tourist Groups. Go through the security and clothing checks as directed and make your way up the drive to the ticket office to the left in the building at the top of the drive, and buy your tickets at the window (no assistance needed).

You will be offered the services of a tour guide (badged individuals), but with younger children it is best to just do a walk round on your own using the map you will get with the tickets. It will be very hot and they will not be able to stand being %26#39;%26#39;guided%26#39;%26#39;, and you will over hear as you go round anyway. Cool drinks available.

Do also visit Vinamek Palace, the tickets are included in Grand Palace charge. VP is a short taxi ride away and is alo a pleasant half day.

Wat Po is round the corner from the Grand Palace, it is also never closed! You do not need a guide and it is easy to fine. More fun than Grand Palace too.

River transport is best so you don%26#39;t need a taxi or tuk tuk.

    Have a great day out!

    Saint29969

There is a river ferry pier at the Sheraton called Tha Si Phraya. You can catch a regualr river ferry that heads up to the Grand Palace and beyond. Cost is about 13-15 baht each. Takes about 20minutes.

also at this pier are the so called water taxis. these are basically long tail boats which you can hire and do a 2 hr trip around the river/canals. cost about 1000-1200B.

if you%26#39;re going to the palace only then take the ferry.

get off at pier number 9 (Tha Thien. it%26#39;s about a 10 minute walk to the palace.

BEWARE!!!! there are people who will say that the palace is closed when you are walking towards the palace. this is wrong, however they can be very convincing. these are the same people who run the gem/diamond scams which you know about already.

also the ticket booth is inside the palace grounds. have heard reports of fake ticket booths outside the grounds.

best way back to your hotel is the ferry again.

Many thanks for all your replys - really useful information - especially the tourist boat website!

  • Bangkok or Beijing

    Hi there,

I will be in Hong Kong this June and I%26#39;m trying to decide where to go from there--I can go to either Bangkok or Beijing and I%26#39;m just wondering which you would choose.

I%26#39;ll post this in the Beijing forum as well.

    Thank you!

    Bangkok or Beijing

I would choose Bangkok as Beijing is a bit chaotic, to say the least, this year because of the Olympics.

    Bangkok or Beijing

We were advised to avoid Beijing so we opted for HK instead. I think prices will be inflated because of the olympics and it will be over crowded with visitors for the olympics.

Bangkok is a good alternative (I would say better but have never been to Beijing)

I would definately choose Bangkok, but I am probably a bit baised having travelled to Thailand every year for the past 10 years! I went to Beijing last summer and didn%26#39;t really like it, it was so crowded, people were very rude and pushed you everywhere and they are still not used to tourists so the service was quite poor. Beijing is one to go just so you have seen the sights, but it will be a nightmare during olympic season!

I have been to both and would choose Bangkok over Beijing for a few reasons.

    1. The Olympics

    2. The accomodation is much superior in Bangkok

    3. It%26#39;s easier to get around

    4. They speak a little more English in Thailand

    (makes it easier)

Having said that, there is a lot to do in Beijing, the great wall and amazing ancient buildings. The shopping is a little better in China but still great in Bangkok. The beds are hard in Beijing (well, they were where we stayed and it is a comment I%26#39;ve heard from other travellers) and the service is nothing like what you get in Thailand. Driving in a taxi can be hair raising in both cities. The hotel ammenities etc in Bangkok are of a fabulous standard (mind you we stayed at the Pen), they haven%26#39;t quite reached that level in Beijing though I bet it won%26#39;t be long. Food is cheep and good in both cities, Peking Duck... yum, tom yam goong... delicious. (Beer is cheeper in Beijing, NZ$4 each, not sure how to spell it but we loved asking for ';bing peejoe sare sare';. Cold beer thanks, I can do that in many languages)

We had a guide in Beijing and I%26#39;d recommend that, saw some of Bangkok on our own but did a couple of day trips with Tong%26#39;s Jerry. The best tip we had from hannah, our Beijing guide was, ';be careful at traffic lights, they%26#39;re just a suggestion';.

Wherever you go, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll find it fascinating.

    Have fun

    mosquito repeller or plugs

does anybody know if i should take mosquito repeller or plug ins for when we go on holiday later this month?

    thanks

    mosquito repeller or plugs

    Hi

we only took mosquito repellent that you put on your bodies,did%26#39;nt need it for the hotel rooms we stayed at,they used to come round and spray the rooms at night and the surrounding areas,Chris.

    mosquito repeller or plugs

Yeh, just take some repellent - lots of hotels either have a plug in, spray or incense for you anyway.

    Hi Gazza,

There wasn%26#39;t an indian restaurant in Cape Panwa when we were there, there is one near the hotel just on the down side of the hill right by Cape Panwa. Had a meal in there, I thought it was just ok for a change. Meals haven%26#39;t got much punch so if you like them even medium strength, when they ask you if you like it mild or spicy, go for spicy and even then it wasn%26#39;t very spicy.

Not bad if you fancy a change of scene within walking distance though.

Travelling to Phuket in late May/June 2008 Weather??

    Hi All,

Unfortunately l can only take annual leave from Late May to 11th june 2008 due to work commitments. l have my heart set on Phuket as we went on our honeymoon back in 1998 and absolutely loved it!

The only concern l have is the weather as l have read up on the net on the best times to travel to Phuket and May/June apparently is the start of the rainy season. Hopefully someone can shed some light with their past experience when traveling in this period and any tips you can offer.

    Thanks

    Sedat

Travelling to Phuket in late May/June 2008 Weather??

It will be very hot, with occasional rain showers, but not enough to worry about.

Travelling to Phuket in late May/June 2008 Weather??

We travelled at exactly that same time last year and had on/off weather...the first 3 days in Patong were perfect. Sunny and the ocean was nice and calm and clear water. Then it started to rain for approx the next 4 days and the sea started getting alot rougher (we were in Kata Beach by then) It didn%26#39;t bother us because we just went and had endless massages, manicures etc...then the last two days cleared up again and it was perfect at Kata Beach.

So basically you will get some nice weather but some rain as well (and when it rained...it rained!)

Saying all that, I wouldn%26#39;t hesitate in going back again at that time of year - so much cheaper for accommodation!

    Hope this helps

    emjean

    Sedat:

I am going at exactly the same time. We intend to make the best of it rain or shine.............

We go at that time every year , some years more rain than others, but ,we still have lots of sunshine , and we love the tropical storms.

It%26#39;s a great time to be on Phuket ......

Less crowded and much cheaper accomodation.

Also when it rains, it is still hot , so it doesn%26#39;t matter if you get wet.

    Lindy.

Hi i was going to create a new post, since you started i hope you dont mind me adding onto yours.

I%26#39;m planning on a honeymoon from 5/28-6/10. Do you think this time frame will be better or worse? either way we plan to make the most of it. we will be travelling from NYC.

any recommendations on clear water beaches located near the nightmarkets. i heard impiana phuket cabana is a nice hotel. any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Dotfamily,

My husband and I are also in our 40%26#39;s and travelled with our 3 children to Phuket last year. We had a fantastic experience with the John Grays Sea Canoe ';hong by starlight'; tour. You get to go inside the hongs ';sea caves'; during the day and again after dark. I would also highly recommend the Siam Safari for your elephant trek. We did the 4 in 1 and had a great time. We also had the best day ever with Coral Seekers. We got our own speedboat and crew for the day and went snorkelling at the outer islands. They also do Phi Phi I think. Not as expensive as you might think. We never had a bad meal-just walk the streets and take your pick. We did enjoy the ';after beach bar'; for dinner.It%26#39;s located just outside of Kata and has the most amazing sunset views and is a great spot to kick back with reggae and dinner and a Mai Tai! We also loved the food at the Rocks restaurant at Karon for a special treat - part of the resort - Marina Phuket? I think....have fun

Just had my immunizations done and malaria meds are also recommended for thailand. Is there a high risk of malaria oin krabi, ko lanta and phi phi? Would you take it? It involves taking so many pills for the whole stay so I am not sure how improtant it is to take it given that we are risk of mosquito bites in ko lanta at night?? what would you do?

    Malaria?

Had mine done yesterday and the doctor said I%26#39;d only need malaria tablets for northern Thailand, Chiang Mai etc.

    Malaria?

Krabi, Koh Lanta and Phi Phi have a low risk of malaria that usually does not warrant taking prophylaxis. Your doctor might have a reason for not wanting you to take even that small risk...don%26#39;t know. Or your doctor may not be completely informed. You might do a bit of reading wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/destinationThailand.aspx and then consult again.

The only place i%26#39;ve had to take malaria tablets for in Thailand is Koh Chang. Have a look at this website - it says the places malaria tablets are recommended for

paperwork of getting married in bangkok

    Hi,

Not sure if you%26#39;ve thought about it but we used %26#39;Faraway Weddings%26#39; legal service (weddingsinthailand.com/legal_wedding_thailan鈥?/a>) which made everything easy and pretty quick on the day at the British Embassy in Bangkok. I think we were all finished within 2 hours and it cost around 21000 Baht in 2007.

We met the %26#39;Faraway%26#39; representative outside the British Embassy, checked the forms (completed before you leave the UK) and went inside to complete paperwork with the British Consul (3600 Baht fee per person required to be paid - 2007 price). After this, an affidavit is signed for the repesentative to do the rest of the paperwork. As long as you receive you passports back from the Consul before you leave the embassy, then you are free to enjoy the rest of your stay. If not, you must meet the representative the next day to collect your passports.

    Hope this is of help.

Without hesitation, try and get to the Anantara up in the Golden Triangle (i hrs drive north of Chiang Rai).

I%26#39;d say Kanchanaburi..I spent overnight there and it%26#39;s truly amazing..

Last time, our guide, tong, brought us to a place where they didn%26#39;t use any hook..it%26#39;s lovely..

She mentioned that there%26#39;s an elephant camp near the floating market but she wouldn%26#39;t recommend for some reasons.

I think you can also do that near bangkok, but make sure that you consider a good one.

Elephants are officially banned from the Big Mango, although you will see a few hanging about for tourists to feed.

    Riding them near Bangkok;

Rose Garden has elephants and a cultural show - just outside town.

Kanchanaburi as already stated is a good ovenighter, and you can stop at the famous floating market on the way.

Khao Yai National Park is just over 2 hour drive from Bangkok, a good priced hotel would be for instance http://www.junglehousehotel.com/ They have elephants at the front of the hotel.

Plenty of small elephant camps around Pattaya (2 hours), including at the Nong Nooch Gardens (my favourite place in that area).

    Hello ,

Appreciate suggestions. looking for a 2 night stay hotel - on the beach with swimming pool and child friendly.Hotel that has easy access to activities for children.

    thanks so much

Koh Chang Songkhran weekend with whild 3 years

Songkran is the busiest time on the island. You%26#39;ll find that most of the good value accommodation has been booked by Thai families already.

Contact as many places as possible and see who has rooms, then decide between them - rather than narrowing down your search before to contacting hotels.

If you are driving here, expect long queues at the ferry piers. If you are on the bus, expect them to be packed and flights are probably already full unless you have tickets already.

Ideally wait a few days until it Songkran is over and then come, it%26#39;ll be a much nicer experience.

Koh Chang Songkhran weekend with whild 3 years

    Hello,

If I am coming in the weekend after Songkhran, what would be your reccomendation?

    Thanks so much

The hotel really depends on your budget and how old your kids are.

    But have a look at:

    KC Grande,White Sands

    Kacha Resort, White Sands

    Paradise Resort,Klong Prao

    Klong Prao Resort,Klong Prao

    Sea View Resort, Kai Bae

and see if they are what you are looking for. Sea View is the quietest spot - but fine if your kids can walk for 10 - 15 minutes to get to restaurants, shops etc. Also good place to canoe as there is a small island nearby. Those on Whitesands are on the busiest beach, but handy for shops etc- maybe easier for you if your kids are young.

Thanks so much Ian. My son is 3 years old. We prefer a place away from noisy night clubs. We can afford upto THB 5000 a day. I have a work permit and stay in BKK.

    Would you know:

    - How much would i spend in visiting the said tourist spot?

    Thank you very much.

    romantic restaurants

what are some romantic restaurants for dinner in bangkok? currently in my %26#39;arsenal%26#39; is only 2 river cruises - loy nava and chao phraya princess. i don%26#39;t know where else to bring my girlfriend. she%26#39;s a local, and i%26#39;m going to visit her for a month or so.

    romantic restaurants

For the cruises, I like the Grand Pearl. We just did it amonth ago.

Beware of the rain, as it gets into the rainy very soon. Last year it started from mid April and only stopped in November!!!

Otherwise, there are 1) Patrarawadee Theatre (restaurant), 2) it%26#39;s cool chic pub/bar next door (forgot the name), and 3) another restaurant in the same area, by the river, name Krua Rakangthong. The last is Thai food and cheap but not chic.

Another is ';Arun Residence'; by the river near Grand Palace Nice fusion food with stunning view of Wat Arun (dawn temple) at night.

    The best Spa in Phuket.

    Hi All,

Where can I get a good massage/ Spa in Phuket? Had a memorable spa experience from Koh Samui at a day spa in the centre of a forest with outdoor massage and cold waterfall dip. Simply awesome! All for only US80 for a 3 hour session.

Was wondering if there%26#39;s anything as great here in Phuket. Will be staying at Patong so any recommendation on day spa or good massage centre?

    Cheers,

    joe

    The best Spa in Phuket.

My wife recommends a place called Lets relax - do a google search for bloomingspa in phuket and you will find it - many an hour was spend there.

    The best Spa in Phuket.

    Joe

I am off to Koh Samui shortly - what is the name of the spa in the forest?? Sounds fantastic.

    Thanks,

    Hassa

I would have to agree (or should I say more correctly, my wife would have to agree), that the Lets Relax was an inexpensive and very enjoyable experience. As frequent Phuket visitors she has utilised this facility many many times. We return again on the 2nd of May and I have no doubt she will be making a bee-line for the lets relax :) Sonny

    Waterfalls

I was wondering if anyone has information on waterfalls on Phuket Island. I am not sure which area they are in. I have been to Phuket a number of times with my family and have never heard anything about waterfalls until recently. I am interested as we will be returning shortly and I always add a new place of interest. Can anyone shed some light on this topic?

  • Coming back from Chaiyapum (Isaan) - BKK

    Hi Folks;

My travel book is very vague about this - and maybe reasonably so as I think this is a small town.

What options do I have for getting back to Bangkok from Chiayapum (I will be getting a car ride up from a Thai friend)? I am looking for most comfortable ways, but not keen on flying in small planes. :)

Coming back from Chaiyapum (Isaan) - BKK

From Nakhon Ratchasima you can fly (jet aircraft), and I think also from Khon Kaen (sp?). By bus it will take probably 4-5 hours, depending if you have to change buses. There should be several buses per day.

If you ask around, you can probably hire somebody to drive you to BKK. I do not know about Chayapum, but it is usually fairly easy to find somebody with a car who is willing to make some money. Planning to try to hire a driver, with the bus as a backup, seems like a decent plan.

Coming back from Chaiyapum (Isaan) - BKK

Nakhon Ratchasima has no planes (unless you want to have a private one). The airport is not currently open to scheduled services.

Express buses leave about every 30 minutes.

Chaiyaphum is not that small, even if it is an %26#39;up country%26#39; town.

The express bus is the only sensible way to go; cheap and fast. About 4 hours.

I spent an hour driving round the town for a restaurant one evening. Every eating place in town served exactly the same dish (which I dislike). No other food, no restaurants open with a menu! just one dish in Chaiyaphum! Gosh they are boring eaters up there!

Anyway, the one thing I remember about that town is the large number of karaoke bars with girls sitting outside the doors in their 3 inch platform shoes........

Intercity bus direct to Morchit bus station in Kamphangphet Road, Bangkok. From there take a taxi to Morchit BTS station.

Thanks for all the info folks - very useful. :)

  • Island Trips

We will be in Phuket in September, on our last visit I wasn%26#39;t game to do any island trips - as I get really sea sick. Can anyone tell me if it is usually a calm trip out to the islands??? Have done a couple of horror journeys in Bali - really ruins the day even with medication????

    Island Trips

Hello Judone. It depends upon where you go. Towards Phi Phi, Kho Racha and southwards or westwards generally it may be very rough that time of year.

If you go east of Phuket, into Phang Nga Bay, it is much more sheltered. The biggest waves I have seen there were only about 1m high, that was during a squall. This is where the trip to the hongs and sea caves go.

    All the best,

    Mark.

    Island Trips

I was wondering about this too as I%26#39;m heading over in August. Are there nice beaches like those on Phi Phi Island in Phang Nga bay though? The pictures I%26#39;ve seen show sort of brown murky water.

We have just come back from phuket and Phang nga bay was beautiful, the water is different from the limestone more greenish coloured but it was still beautiful and clear at some of the beaches we went to. We did Marks sailing tour, its well worth it and the water as mentioned is nice, didnt see any brown water.Going on the sailing boat was a lot more calm that the speed boats to Phi Phi which I found fairly rough. I also get sea sick and was a bit under the weather on the speed boat but fine on the sailing boat...

    Silom @Trinity

Have just booked a couple of nights accommodation at the Trinity Hotel and was wondering if anyone has stayed there just recently, and was it ok? We agonised for ages before booking, and I thought the location was pretty good.

Any comments, good or bad would be gratefully received.

    Cheers Kym

    Silom @Trinity

    MelbourneCountrygirl

Trinity hotel is situated just off Silom Road in a complex called the Trinity complex. it has the hotel as mentioned and an apartment complex for long stay residents. literally outside the foyer is a vibrant clothing market, mainly for thais but still worth a look. there is also a supermarket called Villamarket which has most things.

you are 10 mins from Patpong and a 3/4 minute walk from the nearest skytrain station called ChongNongSi.

there are plenty of decent restaurants close by and watering holes aswell.

i can%26#39;t comment on the hotel itself as i have never stayed there or known anybody that has.

there are a number of reviews of this hotel on the TripAdvisor hotel review section for bangkok. they are quite mixed. it was rated #134th best out of 358 hotels in bangkok.

    Silom @Trinity

Thanks for the info Bkk3. Yes, the reviews are mixed, so I guess we%26#39;ll just see how it goes. We will be out all day anyway, and it is in a good location. Worth a try!!!

Wanted - someone a local in phuket to buy and send me dvd's

After not getting very far with getting an email address, I will move onto plan b - if any local is interested ( ideally having a paypal account ) in getting a whoel heap of movies and sending them to me I would be happy. If movies are 60 baht each happy to pay 120 plus postage - IM me if can help

Wanted - someone a local in phuket to buy and send me dvd's

Er....these DVDs are fakes and I don%26#39;t think anyone is going to risk the charge of exporting counterfeit goods!

    Joe

Wanted - someone a local in phuket to buy and send me dvd's

    well I could only ask,

It is highly doubtful that any one of those dvd businesses would have an email address, which is probably the reason you haven%26#39;t received any answers. And I agree with Joe about the problems that may arise with exporting/importing dvd%26#39;s.

At 120 baht per dvd plus postage, you%26#39;d be better off hiring dvd%26#39;s until you go to Phuket yourself.

I guess Pennywise4 IS pennywise - she/he is willing to pay me US$3 to get arrested for mailing counterfeit goods overseas.

    Maybe not this time . . .

    A buddy entrepreneur I think!

Not really such a strange question, there are shops in Bali where you email them a list of copy movies, pay by Western Union (or whatever) and they are sent to you. Was just reading how someone ordered 80 odd and they arrived ok etc, parcel had not been opened at all.

Im not saying this is ok etc, just that it happens.

    Cathy

    Hi Penny,

I was just going to mention what Cathy said. When my sisters went to Bali there was a guy there that sent you a email list of dvds and you replied with what you wanted and then picked them up when you got there. He even provided a dvd player so you could check them. But he also did send them overseas. Can%26#39;t remember who it was but maybe if you searched on Bali forum it might come up.

PM me to let me know how you go and I will try to remember who it was in the meantime.

    Cheers

    Karin

    Cheers

Someone has kindly sent me the guy in Bali -

I also have a guy in Kuala Lumpur, that does it

I wouldn%26#39;t of thought dvd postage would be as big of an issue as say the on site prostitution at most if not all bars on Bangla rd.

I am sure when i get there in August I will find someone who is interested,

I will buy a whole heap in august and post them to test my theory, I will just go into a Thailand Post office and buy a small package and send it.I will also buy a hungred of so and bring home as I do when ever I am in asia, legalities aside, I have NEVER had them taken from me by any customs officals in Sydney , Melbourne or Adelaide,

I%26#39;d be interested to see what happens. Perhaps you should try only sending about 20 first, just in case they%26#39;re confiscated.

I had some beach sand sent from Phuket to send on to someone in Canada for a school project. Customs intercepted it, emptied it out and sent me a letter saying I could have the sand for a $40 fumigation fee. They do check all the mail...

A guy was arrested recently on the Gold Coast selling imported DVD%26#39;s from Thailand/Bali.

He was selling them for $5 each at the markets and going great guns until someone put him in.

    I wouldn%26#39;t try it lol.

    Hi Penny,

I think you will find that it is a bigger issue if people are bringing them into Oz and then selling them. Mostly at customs they will allow them through if they look for personal use. If you have heaps of the same copy it is obvious that you are going to sell them. Only every now and again will you find a customs officer who is having a bad day or wants to excert their power who will seize them.

As for pirating, illegal or not - you can download them off net and I happen to know that they are readily available for $10 everywhere if you have the right contacts.

How to find the ';walk in'; accommodation or the best deals?

    Hiya

I am arriving in Koh Samui in mid May and haven%26#39;t been to that part of Thailand before. What%26#39;s the best way to go about finding accommodation when you get there? I know its low season, so I don%26#39;t think it will be an issue?

I know there are people in the airport and agents on the streets etc, but how do you know who the legit ones are? Or are you best to just wander the area and have a look? (normally I always book ahead...but I am trying hard to keep the trip flexible!!)

    Thoughts are appreciated!!

How to find the ';walk in'; accommodation or the best deals?

Are you sure you want to wander trying to find a place to stay around after a long flight? And you will exhaust yourself going from one place to another in the heat. Why not reserve a couple of night in advance so you are secure, then have a look around at your leisure if you want to move?

How to find the ';walk in'; accommodation or the best deals?

Yeah thanks - we arrive at 10pm so I was planning to book online at least one night ;-)

Hi, Dragonc is so right. I%26#39;ve been to the airport dozens of times to pick up customers, and not once have I even seen an agent there, come to think of it, you don%26#39;t see them on the street here either, plus it%26#39;s so big here. Book a few nights then you%26#39;re free to roam about to find a bargain. Lou.

We must have hit the %26#39;send%26#39; button at exactly the same time ;-)

    Gay friendly accomodation?

My partner and I will be heading to Koh Samui in September. We want to stay in a gay/gay friendly hotel/resort. Any suggestions? Would prefer not to be right in the middle of it all, but on the other hand do not want to be too far from the nightlife on Chaweng Beach. And no more than THB2500/night. Thanks in advance.

    Gay friendly accomodation?

    Try this:

    http://dragoncastle.net/samui.shtml

    Gay friendly accomodation?

It%26#39;s hard to know how far is %26#39;too far%26#39; away, but, I had a customer last year who stayed at Mana%26#39;s Home (name of B%26amp;B). Small place, nice and friendly, plus sensational views. He thought it was awesome. It would be maybe 10-15 mins away from Chaweng, so if that%26#39;s too far don%26#39;t bother, but my customer raved about this place. Lou.

Good Khao Lak web info..for newbies

We have been to Phuket previously, but are now in the early stages of planning our trip to Khao Lak.

Bali lover thinking of Phuket this year.

Hi, My wife, daughter and I love Bali and travel there at least once a year. Unfortunately Bali seems to be in the news too often these days for the wrong reasons. We are seriously thinking of going to Phuket this year in June. I would appreciate if anyone who has been to both Bali and Phuket give us an idea of the difference eg, shopping, food, beaches etc. Also the weather in Bali in June is fantastic what is the weather like in Phuket.

    Thanks heaps.

Bali lover thinking of Phuket this year.

Bali is cheaper much than Phuket, and a lot bigger. Phuket%26#39;s beaches are better. In my opinion Phuket is also more commercial than Bali, but it is well worth the visit as a change. I%26#39;ve never had a bad meal in Bali, but can%26#39;t say the same for Phuket. The weather in June in Phuket will be hot, with the slight chance of rain showers. Phuket is different, with a different culture and different things to see and do.

Bali lover thinking of Phuket this year.

Hi there, Have a look at the thread below, it will answer some of your questions.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293920-i5037-k959鈥?/a>

There are also a few more threads on Phuket vs Bali, just type that in the search box. Lots of different opinions on eating, shopping etc.

    Cathy

Hi GMCTOTA. I%26#39;d love to know what that stands for.

Although Bali is a little cheaper, the quality there is also a little less. I think shopping might be better for women in Bali and Phuket for men. This has opened debates in the past but I find the Thais are much nicer people. The environment is much better, the beaches in particular (bear in mind two movies relying heavily on exotic beach locations have been shot near Phuket in Phang Nga Bay). The island is cleaner, easier to negotiate and there is more to do. I also prefer the food, but that%26#39;s definitely personal. It%26#39;s easy to include Bangkok (a huge but fascinating city in itself) in your travels, which puts places like the floating markets and Kanchanaburi (river Kwae and tiger temple) in reach, if that takes your fancy.

On the negative side - it%26#39;s further away (and therefore more expensive), transport is extortionately priced and the satays aren%26#39;t as good.

Don%26#39;t forget that there are many places to explore in Thailand which you can get to with only a little more effort. Expand your research and you stand a chance of finding something a little better tailored to your needs. When you go to Bali you pretty much just go to Bali.

To place this in context, you say you love Bali and many call Bali the island of the Gods, I don%26#39;t see it. On a good day I feel Phuket is just spectacular, I%26#39;ve never come close to feeling this in Bali. I%26#39;m always sad to leave Phuket, can%26#39;t wait to get out of Bali. I think we might be different people ;-)

I hope you enjoy your stay.

    Thanks heaps for the info.

We will be staying in Bangkok for three nights, 5 nights in Hua Hin and 12 nights in Phuket. We have decided against Bali for this year.

I really appreciate the feedback and the links for more info.

That sounds like a good trip, I hope you have a great time and don%26#39;t miss Bali too much.

    Hi GHCTOTA,

We like you are Bali lovers and have been many times but we were sick of chasing the bombs around as we were so close on 2 occasions.

3 years ago we took the gamble and went to Phuket. Although we still love Bali and will one day return, Phuket has so much more to offer its kind of like Bali%26#39;s grown up big sister.

We have been twice now to Phuket and Thailand and have 2 other trips planed one in September this year and October next year.

I am sure that you will love Phuket as we do and the Thai people are much the same as the Balinese very beautiful friendly.

I totally agree. I also have been to both and am returning to Phuket in 2 weeks. I enjoyed Bali but found the beaches and people to be a lot nicer in Thailand. Thai has my vote...have a great stay

    Hi,

I bought some Deisel Jeans at Otop Markets, they had a great selection there.

    Diesel Jeans

what price did you pay for them ??

They are likely not to be original Diesels, but rather good knock off%26#39;s

Yes the ones I bought at Otop markets are copies but are great and after some heavy bargaining we paid 700 baht.

Yep, it%26#39;s still open. I went past it a few times last week, and it was all open unless it has closed since then (which I doubt). I hope not, since I plan to go this week as well.

Its open last night, but could close anytime at short notice as the lease has expired last year and eviction notices have been served.

Can someone please update this regularly. We are not due to arrive until 6th April and had this down as a must do.

Will be so dissapointed if it closes.

can anyone update me if it%26#39;s already closed?

    It was open yesterday.

The Bizarre is due to close but no date has been posted. My guess is that no one will know until the day the signs are up and the stalls are closed. This is Thailand afterall.

    any updates ??? please

It was open on Saturday 15th March, great as usual, excellent live music

Still open but far more sellers than customers, as usual. Not surprising when you can buy anything there cheaper elsewhere. Silom night market is far better.

    Phuket town and beach?

    Hello :-)

I am going to Phuket the 10. th of april, for a week and is looking for a hotel. I have been studying the different beach areas, but one question remains. I do not find any hotels placed in the Phuket Bay besides Phuket town?

Is me that has not seach thorugh enough or what? I would like to live very close to Phuket town, but still with the beach at my feet.

Meaning that I should be able to walk to a hotel that is placed on, or in front of a beach from Phuket Town. Is that possible?

And I see a coast at Phuket town but do not find any hotels at these beaches`?? Not even the names of the beaches. The closest I get is Pawna, I think it is.

    Can anyone help?

    Cathrine

    Phuket town and beach?

Do you want to be near Phuket town or Patong beach where all the action is. That is where most people stay, on that side of the island, where all the popular beaches are. Patong is a 30 minute taxi ride into Phuket town.

Panwa is a lovely location but further away from most things so its a lot quieter.

Any reason you want to be close to Phuket town? It is not near any beaches. Sue

    Hi Sue :-)

Thanks for your reply. The reason why I would like to stay in Phuket Town is because of the shopping. I have an idea of that there may be better possibilities for a big selection, and more ';original'; culture to see.

If I stay at the Patong beach it will probably be most tourist shops I find. And I would like to try out the shopping centers in Phuket Town as well. Staying at Pantong Beach would mean that I would have to drive forth and back each time.

In the meanwhile there is also a couple of travelmates to consider, since they would like a beach very much, so It would be very nice if we could combine this with a hotel close to Phuket town but also with short access to a beach.

    Regards

    Cathrine

And as I see it on the Map, Phuket is actually situated towards a coastline.

    Hi Cathrine

I think that you should consider staying on the Patong side of the island. You can find really nice beaches and hotels at Kata or Karon Beach and there are also many shopping opertunities here as well.

If you wanted to go to Phuket town you can simply catch a bus (very cheap) or if you can%26#39;t wait then you could go by Tuk Tuk or a taxi - Phuket Town and Patong are not to far away from each other.

    Hi Cathrine

we had the same %26#39;dilemma%26#39; but opted to stay at Kata (and skip Patong) then plan to visit Phuket Town - one visit for the weekend markets and another visit for the architecture, temple, history etc. Check out: www.cathyandgarystravelpages.com/phuket

    Hope this helps :)

Hi, I think you will be better staying at Kata or Karon, especially if your friends want a nice beach.I can recomend Kata Beach Resort, we stay there every time.It costs very little to travel by tuk tuk to anywhere on the island.

    Cheers Goldie

    Hi Cathrine,

Phuket is an island so yes it is surrounded by coastline, but Phuket town is inland, not actually on the beach like the tourist resorts. We had friends stay at Cape Panwa, and although shopping was not their main agenda, they found enough restaurants to satisfy them and loved the quiet beaches in Panwa, and Phuket town was a relatively short bus ride away, which they did several times a week. So maybe that could be your base. Sue

    Hi Everybody :-D

Thanks a lot for your answers. I think it will end up with a combination, with 2,5 days in Phuket Town in a hotel with a Swimming Pool, If I can find such.

Then 2,5 days on the Phi Phi islands. Does anyone know a nice place to stay here? I believe if you live in Phuket town, it is close to the Ferry?

And then back to Phuket to one of the beach areas

for the remaining 3 days, like e.g Kata Beach, or perhaps Cape Pawna - these are hard choices to make :-D

Now and here I think it is an awfully lot travelling forth and back, but this schedule will satisfy all.

Anyway, I just found out that we are actually in Phuket for the Thailand new year :-) What a coincidence. I had no idea when I ordered the flights, but none of us has been in Thailand before, and - so well no one would think of it. What I would like to hear is if anyone here has experieced that, and if there is something we should consider/be aware of/do in this regard.

    Regards

    Cathrine

Sorry about the grammar and spelling - I am not a native english speaker/writer.

Cathrine, Thai New Year is celebrated over about 4 days. Apart from the usual spiritual, holiday celebrations of the thai people, it involves getting wet. If you venture into Patong, you will very likely get buckets of water thrown over you, get soaked by a big water pistol, or even hosed down. It is all a lot of fun for the locals and tourists alike...however if you dont want to get wet, stay away from tourist hangouts. I have no idea what it%26#39;s like in Phuket town at New years time, it could be worse there! Sue

  • Mission impossible?

    Hello there,

My friend and I can only get 3 weeks off works so this the mission and need some advice whether this is feasable:

    Bangkok - Land 3rd April

Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat (return flight from BKK)

    Phi Phi Don

    Koh Tao - For diving

Koh Phangan - 20th April for the FMP

Samui (just for the flight back to BKK)

We then fly back to London on 23rd April

We%26#39;d probably train or bus it down to Krabi from BKK. Are we trying to fit too much in? Any advise would be great. Thanks!

    Mission impossible?

    Rupe100

I%26#39;ll try and help. would be useful to know how long you want to spend time in each place. anyway here goes.

when you return from SR to BKK, to get to Phi Phi you need to fly to phuket or krabi (ThaiAirasia or Nokair) then ferry to Phi Phi. this takes the least amount of travel time and compared to a sleeper train it%26#39;s not much more expensive.

from phi phi to koh tao - you need to get a bus from phi phi to Chumphorn, probaby need to connect in krabi or phuket. at chumphorn you get a ferry to koh tao. after koh tao get a ferry to samui.

    bkk3

    Mission impossible?

    Thanks for the feedback BKK3.

This is the rough amount of time we want to spend in each place:

    Bangkok - 3 days

    Siem Reap - 4 days

Phi Phi Don - 3-4 days

    Koh Tao - 3-4 days

    Koh Phangan - 2 days

    Samui - 1 day

I guess if we fly down to Phuket we will have plenty of time. Would you recommend stopping in Krabi for a couple of days before/after Phi Phi?

    Thanks

    Hi ,

it%26#39;s not impossibile, but you have to take into consideration around 2 days for flights London-BKK (and return) and around half a day (day or night) for the trips in between the intermediate destinations...

Actually...i%26#39;ve been in my honeymoon for 3 weeks to BKK(4d3n)-then night coach to Krabi-ferry to Koh PhiPhi(6d5n) -Krabi(2d 1n)-then coach to Hat Yai to take night train to KL (4d3n) and then coach to Singapore(5d4n)..

So..you have plenty of coaches from krabi to surat thani(just make sure you have everythning timed in advance having info from internet)

I recommend at least 1 full day in krabi to see the hot springs and the waterfalls or emerald pond...

also ..the night coach from bkk to krabi is ok (night time to spare the days..)

Timing and info found on internet proved correct and helped us..Nice to see so many beautoful things at once, but if we will go another time...we will defenetly stay in one island just to relax :)

    enjoy...:)

    Phuket of Phi Phi

    Hello all:

I%26#39;ll be visiting Beijing, Bangkok, Phuket and Hong Kong late April early May. Wanted to know if it%26#39;s better to book a hotel in Phuket or in Phi Phi Don or Lei, does anybody have any words of advise?

    Thanks

    Phuket of Phi Phi

We stayed in Patong Beach, Phuket and did a day trip on a fast speed boat to Phi Phi and the other significant islands (James Bond, Phi Phi Lei etc) and had a fantastic time. this was before the Tsunami so Phi Phi has probably changed a lot ! But, we thought, nice place to visit but enjoyed staying in the more bustling Patong for 2 weeks.

    cheers

    Vanessa

    Phuket of Phi Phi

I recomment Phi Phi by far. Phuket is full of go go bars and very Westernised. Phi Phi is normal thai restaurants whereas Phuket is full of Mcdonalds, KFC, pizza huts etc. Phi Phi is a much smaller island but definetly better by far. I have travelled all over Thailand and Phi Phi is my favourite Island. We stayed in PP Andamen legacy last time they have a swimming pool and are central we paid 1500bht in high season (jan).

    Hello to you too:

I agree with tineyuk that phi phi is a great place to be. We also were there before the tsunami but i%26#39;ve heard they have done a great job with reconstruction of the place.

It%26#39;s an idyllic place, and other travellers we met the time we were there -that were also in phuket- said the same ...that is more authentic and not so westernised.

I suppose it depends on what you want...visit %26#39;thailand%26#39; and its beauties or another place to have a night life like everywhere else in the world.

Hope you have fun wherever you go

    Marianthi, Volos

I went in January this year and i was there the week before the Tsunami. The 7/11 at the pier has gone and its now a travel shop. they have built much more restaurants all along the beach front all the way to the Hippie Bar. they have also built more hotels/apartments. It still look the same tho only more pubs/bars etc. I just feelPhuket is far too sleazy whereas Phi Phi is more relaxed and you still have the option of having a great night with the many bars. Carlitos bar has had a total revamp.

  • ';passport information';

    Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with childrens passports. My childs passport is due to expire this year. It still has 6 month validy from the date we leave Thailand. But only just scrapes by. However the photo is much different (as was taken when a baby. Just wondering if anyone has ever encounted any problems with this.

    Thanks

    ';passport information';

To avoid problems, it might be a good idea to get a new passport.

    ';passport information';

Hey feesworld, was that you asked this question on Balitravelforum? If its valid, dont waste another 100 dollars on a passport.

    Hi os here we come....

No was not me on bali forum. Do you have experience with this issue? I think I agree, it is valid so should not be a prob hey!

No I dont have experience, but in a couple of years time this will be me. Best place is to ask maybe? would be the Post Office as they can make the right connections. I wouldnt like to spend more money on a valid passport though.

    Good Luck.

    Adam.

Why waste over 6 months of a passport? I%26#39;d leave it be, I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;d be able to tell it%26#39;s your baby in the passport, especially since your names all match.

    Hi feesworld,

We have been in your predicament. We travelled overseas when our child was 5 months old, so obviously the passport showed a baby photo. 3 years later we headed off again and I actually went into the passport office here in Adelaide to enquire.

They told me that because the existing passport showed a baby photo and our son was now 3 and a half years old (and definitely not recognizable by the baby photo) we would need to get a new passport for him. They went onto explain that the ';small'; fee payable (from memory I think it was around $60 in those days)could in fact save us a lot of trouble when entering and leaving the other country and that it was a requirement to have a ';resemblance'; photo in your passport.

Unfortunately this is one of the ';joys'; when travelling with children, a bit like outgrowing clothes before they%26#39;ve actually worn out!!

IMO I would spend the $100 (just think of it as another tax!) just to ensure that you have one less potential hitch you potentially could have to worry about.

    Hope this helps.

    Michelle

if this is the case then they sgould not sell you a 5 year passport. I think that if it was an issue they would only issue them for a couple of years. I would maybe contact the Thai embassy and ask and also enquire at post office. $100 goes a long way in Thailand so why waste it.

I am taking it that your passport will have at least 6 months left on it while you are in Thailand? Maybe if it ends up less than 6 months by the time you leave this to come home this may be a problem. Ask around. Email Thai Embassy and if they say it is ok print a copy and carry it with you.

Let us know how you get on as I may have this problem next year.

    Cheers

    Karin

    Karin,

I know many years ago when my eldest had his first passport as a younger child (he is now 17 years old), it was actually free to update a photo as long as the passport wasn%26#39;t expired. Everything nowadays seems to have a ';processing fee or tax/levy'; attached to it!

The problem may not only be with the Thai entry/exit, it could also pose a problem here in Australia.

Feesworld, as well as contacting the Thai embassy as Karin suggsted, you could also take a look at the passport website www.dfat.gov.au, this may help, otherwise give the Australian Passport Office a call.

I do agree with Karin, $100aud goes a long way in Thailand and I for one don%26#39;t like paying fees and taxes if unavoidable.

I will be interested to know if you find out anything.

    Michelle

    Hello again

Thanks for all your responses. I have since rang the Aust. passport office, who actually said I would be better off applying for another passport (at the expense of $100 plus $75 for quick processing). They also suggested to ring the Thai consulate. I did and spoke to someone. Was a little difficult to communicate, but her response ';was as long as you have 6 months valid a child who has grown up in the photo is no problem';....However Im still a little concerned, would hate to run into problems. Yes I do agree with Karin, that they shouldnt allow passport for children for 5 years if you need to update them anyway before the expiry. Its a bit of a rip off!!

Hey if it was me, there would be no way I would be paying an extra $175 on a passport that is valid.Take proof (medicare card, birth certificate)that you have children of young age and tell them to nick off if you have problems.

To pay out extra, insults me.

Good Luck, but dont get suck in and pay more out of pocket.

    Regards

    Adam.

    Similans/Surins... But without diving/snorkeling?

I have seen so many lovely pictures from Similan and Surin islands. And I would really love to visit them while in Khao Lak.

But if I get it right, the tours that are made from Khao Lak to the Similans/Surin, are snorkeling+diving tours. Is there any way to get just to the islands without spending hours in the boat while others dive/snorkel? :?

I even considered of renting private speedboat, but the price was too dear form my budget (about 29 000 THB).

Me and my partener, we would just love to spend the day on the awesome beach, do some swimming and take lots of photos ;)

I just think the water/beach/nature looks so lovely:

    Similans/Surins... But without diving/snorkeling?

If you go to Tab Lamu pier (about 10-15 minutes from KL, depending on where you are staying) I%26#39;m sure you will be able to get a ';day ticket'; transfer to the Similans, to and from ';Duck Island'; - best beach, pure white and crystal clear sea but VERY popular with tour boats - or ';Honeymoon Island'; where the HQ of the National Park Rangers is situated. Great beach, a small restaurant, you can walk across to the other side and there is great snorkelling from the beach.

The beach at Surins is not as nice for spending a day IMO.

    Similans/Surins... But without diving/snorkeling?

I have been doing a lot of research on the Similans in preperation for my upcoming trip. Though I have no first-hand knowledge, this is what my guidebooks and websites tell me:

The National Park offers inexpensive boat transfers from Thap Lamu pier, but they don%26#39;t really follow a fixed schedule. Visit their office at the pier or call them at 08 7659 5045. There are also many tour operators that will give you a ';transfer-only'; price if you don%26#39;t want to snorkle - you can find their offices at the pier. These options will cost anywhere from 2000 to 3000 per person. You might even find a fishing boat willing to take you for 1000 or so. Your best bet is to head out to the pier before 8:00 (most boats leave around 8 - 8:30), and see what%26#39;s available. Transfers between the islands are offered by the National Park rangers and cost 150 - 300 per person, but again the schedule is erratic.

You may want to read http://www.similans.net/gettingto for more info about getting to the Similans.

    Hi,

I%26#39;ve been looking into exactly the same thing including an over night stay.

I have been speaking to siam adventure divers who have told me they should be able to provide transport to and from the island by speedboat.

Try emailing them to see what they can do for you.

    Bars in Bangkok and teens??

We are a family of 6 travelling to Bangkok Aril 08, 4 adults 1 17yr old 1 14 year old, then we are onto the dusit Hua hin . Are there any restrictions about taking teens this age into bars etc? Advise gratefully received

    Bars in Bangkok and teens??

The official age to get into a bar is 20.

The police do make checks and some of the bars have staff on the door to ensure everyone is over age.

You should have no problem in your hotel depending which hotel you are staying.

    Bars in Bangkok and teens??

So no problem with restaurants selling alcohol then?

If it%26#39;s a combination bar and restaurant, you should have no problem taking teens or younger inside. Otherwise, the staff/door people will politely advise you of the age restrictions as they apply to their establishment. In night entertainment areas such as patpong, nana plaza, soi cowboy, etc. there%26#39;s no problem with accompanied children walking around outside (they just can%26#39;t go inside the bars). Hope that helps.

What exactly is Thai Law. I have been told that I cannot take my 14 year old daughter in a club lounge in a 5 star hotel during happy hour. This was not the case 3 years ago in Bangkok and it certainly is not the case in other parts of Thailand, we have just come back. This is putting me off staying in Bangkok as we like to book a club room and enjoy those benefits including a drink before dinner. Surely you have to have a law that governs everywhere not as and when they choose.

    Hi;

The Thai%26#39;s law is prohibited alcohol sell to underage people which is less than 20y.o. That is a little better than USA No Alcohol for under 21y.o individual , but, some country as Mexico you can drink all you want when you reach 18 y.o.

The reason kid under 18y.o. is not allowed to enter the club bars is very simple, the bars are designated as places for drinking alcohol. Here is something I don%26#39;t understand why this is an issue.

Who are the Parents like to expose their chidren to the Alcohol at such young ages ?

I like wine much better than hard drink

Thai law covers everywhere, its a matter of enforcement. Its strict in Bangkok and the new government take the law seriously. Don%26#39;t expect things in Thailand to work the way they do in your home country.

dragonc is absolutely correct here. and enforcement of the law also varies between individual police districts within bangkok. the district police commanders each have their own ideas about how strictly to enforce the law and have considerable latitude. as a rule, everything is much more lax outside the metropolitan areas.

Now don%26#39;t take this the wrong way - but I suspect you will have little problem as if your teens are anything like a normal size they will look plenty big and old enough to thais. I took my daughter into many bars aged 14 or so with no issues - maybe if you were to try it in soi cowboy or in gogo bars they might well get iffy - the issue thai police are concerned about is thai under age drinking ( thais tend not to take drink that well so younger thais become sometimes violent and a danger to others and themselves)

was in a bar in bkk saturday where there were a couple of well behaved young kids - no problem.

Thanks for the advise, so,,,,, what if they are in the bar but drinking soft drinks, neither would be drinking alcohol any way other than the occasional glass of wine with dinner? Would it still pose a problem entering the bars?

My daughter is 14 and when in the Far East I am sure they think she is older but I just would not want the risk of being turned away from hotel bars. We would not dream of going to bars outside of hotels with her but in a hotel we like to sit and relax and have a drink and bearing in mind this has never been a problem before for us, we are giving Bangkok a miss and we will find another route to get to Krabi.

The best honeymoon places - urgent

    Hi all

I am trying to find a nice honeymoon destination in late July. Thought of Thailand but I am worried about the monsoon season affecting Bangkok.

    Looked at other places

    1. South Africa - only 19c temperatures

    2. Malaysia - is there enough to visit and do in Kuala Lumpur?

    3. Dubai - been there already

What are places are suitable? Would like a great mix of beach, sights, shopping and great food....

    Can anyone help me please....

    Thanks

The best honeymoon places - urgent

    Hi I saw your message...

Best honeymoon (which my husband organised last year)

    Singapore (great for shopping)

    Maldives (Wow)

The best honeymoon places - urgent

for great weather in July - try Singapore for a few nights and then Bali (try Sanur beach)

Why would you want to go to Bankok for your honeymoon? Anywhere in Asia or in the tropical zone is a risk weather wise but it is a risk worth taking as the rain is often sporadic. You could consider the Greek Islands. Santorini is a knockout. Athens is an historical awesome and is worth a full 2 day stop-over on the way to the islands. The food and people are also great.

If you really want something outstanding come on down to the land of OZ. Australia. It%26#39;s a long way but you will never forget it. Go to Cairns, the Barrier Reef, or one of the Witsunday Islands. The shrimps here are as big as a banana and the mud crabs are to die for.

    Hi,

Think about Canary Islands, it%26#39;s exactly the mix of beaches, shopping, sights and food is also great. Some hotels are fantastic, people are friendly, no health risk at all (diarrhea in honeymoon? - not the best option :-)), wheather is not too hot, so if your honeymoon can be out of Asia, this could be a perfect choice. If Asia, then Maldives (Sun Island Resort: great!!).

Thanks guys. Your feedback has been great.

Any other suggestions would be helpful...

Does anybody know whether Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur is nice????....Somebody suggested I do Singapore and Kuala Lumpur on the same trip?????

Re honeymoon, just pick up a good class cruise ship get a stateroom with a balcony and let the cruise line pamper you, they do this so well. Whatever age or occasion a cruise offers it all.... happy days.

    Hi,

We have been to Malaysia several times and also Thailand. I prefer Kuala Lumpar to Bangkok, not quite as chaotic and lots to see. I would not recommend spending all your time in the city. Why not do a 2 centre which is what we usually do. 3 or 4 days in Kuala Lumpar and maybe the rest in somewhere like Pangkor laut on the west coast of Malaysia or Borneo where we have been 3 times for somewhere a bit different. It depends what you are into. I prefer Thailand for the culture and the people but it also has lovely beaches on the islands.

Borneo has the Orang utans, beautiful beaches and wildlife. Bali is another good choice, good weather and beautiful scenery and the Maldives would take some beating for beaches and diving if that is all you need.

The Far East has everything, we love it and go back time and time again. We also loved Sri Lanka who desperately need tourists to go back. Beautiful country, good beaches but quite a bit of poverty which you will see everywhere in places but Sri Lanka slightly worse than some.

    Julie

New Zealand most definitely - it is beautiful. But July, not too sure what the weather is like then. Thailand amazing - Bangkok (3/4 nights is plenty) then onto Koh Samui (Chaba Samui hotel) - just glorious. Only rains hard for about 5 minutes then is dry agian in 10.

If your desire is Asia then I would recommend

4-5 days in Singapore (Shangri-La) followed by

the same amount of time on Langkawi Island,Malaysia.

Check out the Datai resort or the new Four Seasons.

A good mix of shopping and nightlife in Singapore

and total relaxation on the beach in Langkawi.

  • Airport to our hotel during peak time 5:30pm

    Hi everyone,

What%26#39;s the best way to get to our hotel from the airport during the crazy mad traffic time of 5:30pm?? We will be staying in a hotel close to a BTS skytrain (either Chit Lom station, National Stadium, or Ratchathewi Station). Thanks so much for your great advice!

Airport to our hotel during peak time 5:30pm

Taxi on the Expressway. Allow for an extra half hour.

Airport to our hotel during peak time 5:30pm

    Agree with Bill

Taxi on the expressway and expect to be around the hour maybe + a little bit.

5:30 is the middle of the rush two hour and traffic is heavy.

You will make good progress on the expressway till you get close to the first intersection, then traffic starts to crawl.

    Just sit back and relax.

Thanks guys! I was hoping you were going to say the taxi as I did not want to lug our luggage all over the public transport system. Don%26#39;t mind waiting patiently in traffic as long as it%26#39;s in the comforts of a taxi. Cheers!

Are you allowing for the very likely delays in passing thru immigration and collecting luggage? By the time you get to the taxi queue, the worst of the rush hour traffic might have passed. If not, you might consider having a cup of tea or some thai noodle soup (I%26#39;d rather eat than sit in a traffic jam), Many Thais wait a bit before driving if it%26#39;s during rush hour. Also, it depends on which day you%26#39;re arriving. Weekends are no problem, Friday is the worst, other days all about the same.

Hi Bkk Resident! Thanks so much for thinking of those 鈥?I didn鈥檛 even think about the days/immigration/luggage/etc (silly me!) Our flight arrives 5:30pm on a Saturday actually so after immigration and luggage we should be (hopefully) out in about an hour - it looks like we scored the jackpot then!! Cheers!

You should have no problem at all, most likely a quick taxi ride [but I%26#39;d still have the driver use the expressway and pay the extra toll]. take care.

You could also ask one of the stewardesses to tell the capt to %26#39;%26#39;give it some welly coz i%26#39;m running late for a meeting%26#39;%26#39; when you are still a couple of hours from touch-down - a comment i once heard from a fellow passenger on a BA flight on route from London to Bangkok! ten mins later i saw the very same stewardess pointing out the %26#39;%26#39;guilty party%26#39;%26#39; to the first officer who appeared to be truly lost for words.

Meter taxi is best for this time period. The taxi sign up desk is outside the arrivals hall, near the curb. Ignore all of the touts in the arrivals hall selling rides into town unless you want to pay more than a meter taxi will charge. (The fare is for everyone you can stuff in the cab safely, not per person!)

You mention being close to a BTS Skytrain station. This is okay after you are in the city but the Skytrain does not extend out to the airport just yet!

Your other options, other than the faster meter taxi, is a cheap 35 baht city bus to the first Skytrain stop at Oh Nut and from there you take the Skytrain to somewhere NEAR your hotel. At the airport you first need to take a free shuttle bus to get to their little bus station for the 35 baht bus ride into town. There is an Airport Express Bus that leaves directly from the airport terminal for 150 baht per person. Two people sharing the cost of a meter taxi ride into town is about the same price without lugging your bags down the street and is door to door!

Thanks Infidelal for your tips! I must remember your instructions about the metered taxi stand in the airport as I%26#39;ve read a lot of stuff about people trying to sell you more exy transport. Cheers!

Look for the sign saying ';public taxi'; and don%26#39;t agree if the dispatcher suggests a flat fare of 400 or 450 baht. This is a scam! Insist on the meter. Your fare on the meter should be 200 or under (maybe a bit more if you get caught in a traffic snarl) plus highway tolls of 65, plus 50 baht airport surcharge. So less than 350 baht in total.

You pay the tolls yourself by giving the driver the money. If you don%26#39;t have any small notes, pay the toll with a 1000 baht note in order to get change. Or when you go the the ATM machine in the airport, get 9900 instead of 10,000 to force the machine to give you 100 baht notes so you can pay taxi fare. Bangkok taxi drivers can%26#39;t or won%26#39;t change 1000 baht notes.
