what is the difference between the two Bangkok airports

I am coming up with two different bangkok airports, and I want to make sure I am flying in and out of the same one. I see they have Donmueang and Suvarnabhumi. Can anyone tell me the difference. I am flying from the US to Bangkok, and then taking a domestic flight to phuket. thanks

what is the difference between the two Bangkok airports

Hi Michael,

Last year, Thailand wanted to change their Internation Airport for Bangkok from Don Mueang to Suvarnabhumi. However, due to problems with the new airport (Suvarnabhumi) and urgent needs for repairs, they had to re-open Don Mueang again......

These two airports are NOT close to each other, taking a taxi from Don Mueang to Suvarnabhumi (or the other way around) will take you almost 1 hr (even longer if traffic is stuck).

Unfortunately the airports keep changing their function and shuffle airlines from Don Mueang to Suvarnabhumi and back again, especially for national carriers. For now all major international airlines fly to Suvarnabhumi, but for the national carriers you must check their websites. Some national carriers even fly from both airports!!!! And this keeps changing for the next few months.

If you find out that your domestic flight is from the other airport, keep in mind that domestic flights in Thailand are very cheap. Consider buying a new ticket with an airline that departs from your arriving airport.

Good luck!

Hi michael,

the easiest way to explain is your International flight from USA will arrive at Suvarnabhumi terminal

And domestic flights to Phuket fly from Don Muang, there are exceptions for some domestic flights, all you need to do is check with the Air line on line. If you are going from both terminals make sure you leave plenty of time for check in.

i would fly Air Asia or Bangkok Airways to Phuket - that way, you will go from Suvarnabhumi. But, if you are breaking your journey in Bangkok for a night or two, then Don Muang is more convenient from the city.

I had to take a cab between the 2 airports after Nok Air changed to Don Muang, which honestly was a pain in the a**!!

Does anyone know the current status of various airlines. We are arriving in Bangkok in July by Thai Air from Hong Kong... I am assuming that will be Suvarnabhumi ... is that right?

We then want to fly to Phuket ...can someone tell me which airlines do this from Suvarnabhumi?

Thank you

ALL international flights arrive and depart from BKK (Suvarnabhumi).

Thai Air domestic flights with 3 digits (eg TG-123) operate out of BKK. Thai domestic flights with 4 digit flight numbers (eg TG-1234) fly from Don Muang (DMK).

ALL Air Asia and Bangkok Airways flights operate out of BKK.

ALL Nok Air domestic flights leave from DMK with the exception of the short hop to Hua Hin which Nok operates for SGA. Nok Air%26#39;s international flight to Hanoi flies from BKK.

ALL 1-2-Go flights operate out of DMK.

DMK is slightly closer to city centre than BKK, but, surprisingly, it%26#39;s often faster to get to BKK.

thank you bill2p for your clear response
