What is it like to drive on Koh Chang?
How are the roads?
How far into the interior of the island can you go with a 4X4 ? I%26#39;m bringing a Fortuner.
Is the main road good and does it go all the way around the island?
I%26#39;m arriving the 16th of April - are reservations necessary, or will there be plenty of choices?
Any suggestions for where to stay that will offer diversity for our teenager, yet good for our 7 year old?
Thanks. This is a great site with helpful posts.

arriving on 16th april is at the tail end of the Thai New Year and i suspect a lot of places will be busy so i%26#39;d enquire now about accommodation.
there is only one main road in Koh chang. it doesn%26#39;t go completely round the island. the road is a bit narrow with lots of twists and turns and is steep in many parts. i would not recommend to drive at night as there are few or no road lights in between main resort places.
there are a number of waterfalls you can visit, some access roads are quite bad. remember a Fortuner (even though it has a 4x4 system, and a crap one at that) is more a recreational vehicle rather than a true 4WD. and if you are renting it and you sustain any off road damage then you will be up for a few bucks.

If you%26#39;re looking for a nice hotel then it%26#39;s nearly always better to book something in advance if you want to get a cheaper rate than the often extortionate walk in rates. But if you%26#39;re happy to look around when you arrive then you%26#39;ll find a place no problem.
You can head inland a little at the north of the island, follow the road inland past Ban Kwan Chang elephant camp and you can go another mile or so on a dirt track. In the far south east of the island you can get down to Long Beach, the road is paved part way and part is dirt road with a couple of very steep hills.
Kai Bae wouldbe good or the north end of Klong prao beach - KP has a nicer beach, but has shops etc nearby, KB has more shops etc but the beach isnt as good.
Thank you very much for the excellent information!
