Hotel on the River

We have stayed at the Sheraton Orchid twice before and really like the location. I have just enquired on room rates and they have more than doubled in the last 3 years. They are asking 拢240.00 per night for a triple room on the executive floor. We paid around 拢100.00 for this 3 years ago.

Can anyone recommend a similar style hotel located with river views which won%26#39;t cost us as much as that. We like to include the executive benefits and also I have now been told that my daughter who is 14 will not be allowed in the executive lounge during happy hour, apparently it is illegal under 18, how come 3 years ago when she was 11 she could. I cannot see that this is Thai Law, we have just spent 2 weeks in Krabi and that was not the case there. Can anyone throw any light on this and whether this will be the case in all Bangkok hotels.

I look forward to any advice.

Hotel on the River

I stayed at a 4star place on the Chao Praya one trip, cost around 1500baht a night 3yrs ago. I have usually booked through ThailandHotels.com, but things may have changed. The good thing there is you can select River as a zone, all the hotels then listed are on the water. 240quid a night is ridiculously expensive for BKK, I never stay with foreign owned places anyway for that very reason. You will easily get 4 star for much less than 100quid a night, loose the last star, save a small fortune.

Hotel on the River

Suggest you look through TA%26#39;s list of hotels. Costs in Thailand have risen rapidly in the last couple of years, and a few hotels are trying to push themselves further upmarket in line with government tourism policy of aiming for the high-end.

In relation to the hotel barring your daughter from the bar, they are correct. Thai law states that anyone entering a bar must be 20 years old or more (not 18 as stated). This has been the law for a while and was not strictly enforced before, but now the new government are tightening up.

Hi Noodles,

We stayed at the Marriott a couple of years ago, Junior Suite with club and paid around 拢75 a night, got a quote for this December and it was 拢190 a night.

Prices have certainly gone up!!

We have decided to stay at the Shangri La, Krungthep with club and is costing 拢211 a night.

We are staying over New Year so don%26#39;t know if that has ramped it up

Still not cheap but slightly cheaper than 拢240.

I would suggest you have a look at prices for Royal Orchid Sheraton on:

www.hoteltravel.com

I have booked with them for our stay at ROS in June this year and found their rates to be very competitive. I have used Hotel Travel on previous trips and have never had a problem with them.

Hi Sarah

Thank you for that, I am sure you will pay more for that time of year but the last time we stayed was over Xmas and New Year 3 years ago and we paid around 拢100.00 a night for club benefits also at the Sheraton. We are now talking February and they want so much more. I emailed the Oriental next door and they want 拢250.00 a night without any breakfast or benefits. I just won%26#39;t go I will fly to Thailand via Singapore which is so much cheaper.

A real shame as we enjoyed Bangkok, they will price themselves out of the tourist market. It just makes the prices we pay in Krabi so much more worth it.

All this rubbish about being 20 years old to go in a bar. We are talking Thailand here, right yeah. Our daughter has been visiting bars in this part of the world with us since she was 6 so now being 14 you really would not think it would be an issue, it certainly isn%26#39;t an issue in Krabi or Singapore, I think we will bypass Bangkok and fly straight to Krabi. Thanks for your advice though.

On the Bangkok side of the river there is:

The Sheraton (as you mentioned)

The Shangri-La

The Oriental

Lebua (not exactly on the river but close enough with great views)

On the Thonburi side of the river is:

The Riverside

The Pennisula

The Marriott

The Hilton Millenium

There are other choices but those are your safest in terms of quality.

Hi

I stayed at the Marriott last week and paid 拢115 per night for a large room with two double King sized beds that overlooked the river.

I really enjoyed the stay and the Staff were very helpful and considerate. The Hotel has a nice pool and fitnes suite and provides a courtesy boat transfer to the pier with the Skytrain terminal every 30 mins.

Thailand-hotelguide.com 拢79/88/108 for a club room inc breakfast Ist April/31st Oct. Kids always asked to leave when serving free drinks you can take them a drink to your room.
