where to see the real Thailand

So many ways to answer your question. On one hand, the real Thailand can be found in Bangkok, very close to tourist areas even. It can be as simple as choose a soi and walk. Even the sois off of Sukhumvit Road change character a few hundred meters drom the main road. For jungle and more natural areas, probably go Chiang Mai area. Finding a tour should be easily done once you arrive, particularly if you have time. For areas that are less visited by tourists, northeast Thailand is the best choice in my opinion. It is lightly visited, but tourism is growing. Nakhon Ratchasima, Surin, Ubon Ratchathani, are in southern Issan. I am not familiar with the northern part that much. My spelling of place names may be imperfect.

Nong Khai, Udon Thani and Kohn Kaen are awesome less touristy places to visit all in the NE or Issan. My favourite being Kohn Kaen. Not all that impressed with Nakon Ratchasima also known as Korat, but there are some awesome small villages to visit in the surrounding area.
