Soi is the Thai word for Street

Sukhumvit is the upmarket part of Bangkok where you can find fine malls, restaurants, boutiques and touristy places.

Might be confused

Several BTS stops along Sukhumvit. The Emporium Mall and a few other places along there but most of it is spread out. Nana is a red light district/drinking area and there is a night market near there but prices are high. Silom is better (Sala Daeng BTS).

Taxis are metered and cheap in Bangkok though the traffic can be hard work. Use the BTS or MRT (subway) if possible.

Chatuchuk really starts about 10am and goes on to around 6pm, I think. It gets very busy and a few hours is enough for most people as lots of walking is involved. BTS Mo Chit or Chatuchak Park on MRT.

Lots of malls and other places in Bangkok. Many around the Siam area. A helpful site:

';Soi'; is actually the Thai word for ';lane'; or ';side-street.'; Major streets bear the name ';thanon'; or ';road.'; Sois are numbered side-streets. Major sois are named as well, and can themselves have numbered sois. For example Sukhumvit soi 55 is called ';Thonglor'; and a good restaurant I know there is on Thonglor soi 13.

Sukhumvit is a major road which begins at the end of Ploenchit Road (at the 1st Stage Expressway) and runs 400 kilometres to Trat on the Gulf of Thailand (it%26#39;s one of Thailand%26#39;s 4 main roads).

The BTS makes a number of stops on Sukhumvit. Nana (sois 3-15 - ';Lower Sukhumvit';) is not just a nightlife district, but near several major hotels and restaurants as well as inumerable businesses offering goods and services of interest to travellers. The same applies to Asoke (soi 21). Phrom Pong (soi 24-26) is near a major upscale department store (Emporium), a number of popular pubs and an upscale nightlife district (soi 33). Thonglor (soi 55) is where Bangkok%26#39;s young and cool creative set hangs out. On soi 38 just beside the BTS station is a night market with excellent street food. Ekkemai (soi 63) is near the eastern bus terminal.

Hi

thanks all for your replies it has soted my confusion.

thanks

One more thing about Sois is that the odd numbered ones are on one side of the street and the even numbered ones are on the other and they don%26#39;t necessarily match up. For example, Soi 21 is on one side of Sukhumvit and the same road on the other side is Soi 16.

The way that the side streets are numbered is similar to UK houses. It makes perfect sense to have %26#39;odds%26#39; on one side and %26#39;evens%26#39; on the other as it helps to work out where your final destination is likely to be. Obviously, relative numbers are rarely opposite each other as it depends on the frequency of turnings either side of the road and also what%26#39;s in between in terms of buildings, distance, etc.

I believe Chatuchak is open as early as 8am and you should plan on getting there at that time. As it gets later, the place gets EXTREMELY crowded and EXTREMELY hot.

There is plenty on Sukhumvit Rd. It all depends on what you are looking for.

Hi;

Majority of Sois are just dead end streets. It is sound very frustrated to first hear . However, the benefits are many , the soi can provide quiet neighbor in the middle of Bangkok tourist area. The soi can have many business catering all kinds of people local as well tourist . IMO, Thonglor is just to Big for a soi. It should be called thanon .

The lower Sukhumvit sois are mainly tourist concentrations areas

Actually, you can never tell with the designation ';soi'; whether it%26#39;s a dead-end street or a major thoroughfare. And even the small sois are often interconnected, or lead in to other major streets, providing a valuable alternative routing.

Sorry to be thick but whats BTS?
