Live in Long Beach,Ca. and have been to Thailand 3 times (4 really).Know a wealthy old retired man who went to Hui Hin and moved there for good calls it his knew found paridize! It is the Royal families old hang out and summer home so very snooty and expensive.Check travel books for best choices as is the rule in Thailand go there walk up and look around and haggle over the price for the best deal.If you make reservations in advanced your stuck with the price. If you go and take advice of taxi or tuk tuk driver then they took you there they want their commission and it is figured into the price.Hui Hin to Koh Samui by boat best way but go farther down the pennisula and it is cheaper (check travel books) flying is always more costly but faster.Air back to Bangkok cheaper in long run and alot faster.Elephant rides are everywhere the tourist go.Koh Samui is geared to the beach and health spas and the full moon madness bash on the next island over so a Elephant ride at Hui Hin might prove more timely plus you could take inland towards the rain forest in the hills and the Mon kingdom in Burma.Good luck have fun.Tom

bangkok hui hin then koh samui

hi----

I just returned home from Thailand yesterday. We stayed in Bangkok and Koh Samui for two weeks.

BANGKOK----stayed at Dream Hotel for the start of our trip---nice rooms, clean and very inexpensive ($90 USD/night). Felt like location was central to everything we wanted to see.

At the end of our trip we stayed at The Davis Hotel in hopes that the bed would be softer, especially since their website touts how soft the beds are (all the beds we encountered in Thailand were extremely hard). It was expensive ($350+/night) and no better than Dream.

KOH SAMUI-----pretty disappointing. The beaches were severly polluted. I have never seen anything like it. We stayed at Rocky%26#39;s Resort and it was fair---kind of geared more towards families with kids, although the garden pool is reserved for adults which was nice. The best thing on Samui was Tamarind Springs Spa (in Lamai). I have been to spas all over and this place was first class. We had to go back it was so great. That being said, we only went to the Forest section of the spa which is new and more expensive, but totally worth it.

Have a great time!

I did the high end and stayed at the Peninsula in Bangkok. Worth it to stay on the river as it%26#39;s a perfect respite from the chaos of the city. The hotel is expensive by all standards but a deal in Thailand. Did Anantara in Hui Hin and my family and several friends have stayed since and loved the place and the town of Hui Hin. Tons of very reasonable restuarants and the food is good. Very, very casual and low key. It%26#39;s a $4-5US cab fare into town and no more than five minutes ride. The Anantara has a shuttle too. The hotel is Thai style which makes it more unique than some of the other jumbo resorts like Hilton and the others. While it might have been more $$$, made up for it with cheap dinners in town every night and the hotel has drink specials throughout the day. Also, if you book right, they do stay four pay for only three nights specials. You%26#39;re going in high season so it could be a bit more pricey, but we%26#39;ve found it worth it and really enjoyed. Make sure you are in Bangkok to go to the weekend market which you take the train out to. Not to be missed!

Enjoy!
